how to twist wires

hello everyone,

so i work with twisted wire a lot and i'm used to make them my self by folding my wire in half, and attaching the connected half in a drill hook, that way the drill will twist it along with putting a tension on the wire... however, today's the first time i'm trying it on gold wire, and it breaks every time i try ... i have no clue why is it doing it, it never happened to me before with silver wire...

any one can help?

donc, je travaille avec fil tordu beaucoup et je suis habitué à les faire moi-même en pliant mon fils en deux, et en attachant la moitié connectée dans un crochet de forage, de cette façon, la perceuse va tordre le long de mettre une tension sur le fil ... Cependant, aujourd'hui, c'est la première fois que je l'essaie sur le fil d'or, et il se brise à chaque fois que j'essaie ... je n'ai aucune idée pourquoi est-il le faire , il ne m'est jamais arrivé avant avec fil d'argent ...

quelqu'un peut vous aider?


Oui ton fil ne doit pas avoir été recuit ou alors c'est qu'il a été mal fondu en lingot et qu'il y avait des impuretés (???)

Si tu utilise du fil d'or pour faire de la cannetille (french wires ) il te faut le recuire et le refroidir dans de l'alcool ménagé ou méthyle  

Yes your yarn should not have been annealed or so it was that it was badly melted in ingot and that there were impurities (???)

If you use gold wire to make purl (French wires) You need to rehide it and cool it in alcohol in the home or methyl

merci pour votre reponse... j'ai pas le vocabulaire technique en francais, j'ai essayé de traduire sur google mais ca donne pas les mots voulu... merci pour le lien je l'utiliserai pour les prochains posts.

donc si j'ai bien compris, je passe la flame sur le fil en suite je le refroidis avec de l'alcole .... this is clever, j'ai pas pensé a ca ...

le fil que j'ai utilisé est un 18 carat 20 gage.

la flame doit etre moyenne ou intence ?

Pour te donner une idée ,la flamme d'une bougie est une flamme dite "molle" car il n'y a pas d'air pulsé (compresseur ou bouteille d'oxygène ) .

elle est jaune ..pas bleue ..c'est avec ce genre de flamme que tu recuit ton métal .en le posant sur une "perruque" un entrelacs de fil d'acier ,ou si tu n'en as pas ,un cgarbon ..; .."" TOUT"" ton métal argent ou or ...les deux peuvent être refroidis rapidement avec de l'alcool ménagé ..comme il n'y a pas d'oxygène dans l'alcool le métal devient plus malléable ,plus mou ...

et donc pour faire de la cannetille (french wire ),ou des anneaux ,c'est plus facile ....les métaux vont prendre une couleur rosée ....ce n'est pas grave ...cela part ensuite ...

Sure you must be annealing before twister..
Even for each process that you put any pressure in metal, working precious metals in jewellery without this step is common to "American jewelers technics", because they are looking for upgrade propertys..
This is clearly another approach.
Meanwhile in the other side, we making jewellery..

so the first picture is the result i usually get with silver wire, the second is what i got yesterday with gold wire and it's a savaged piece that is only 5 cm long, though i was working with 200cm long wire.

la premiere photo s'agit de ce que j'obtiens comme resultat en utilisant du fil en argent, la deuxieme et ce que j'ai obtenue avec le fil en or hier, ce que vous voyez sur la photo est ce que j'ai pu recuperer d'un fil de 2 metres , ca ne depasse pas les 5 cm , le reste etais concassé.

Thx for the pictures, clearly this wire was a problem.
So..
Some tips to annealing correctly.
Roll up the wire, make a tightened pack, well attached, making a mass, this way you can heating without risk to fusing any part of wire arriving uniformly at the good temperature.

did you anneal your wires after twisting ?
I think that slight irregularities in your twist are risponsible of the deformation...

What do you think about this aproach:

-twist your wire
-anneal
-cut the loop
-pass it on a "filliere" (dont know the name of this tool used to laminate wires by passing througt different size of conique holes) to regularise the cross section of the all length wire
-anneal
- then roll your wire gentely step by step to help the wire laminate a the right place

Ifdefformation happend afterall, then you can fuse or brazing the twisted wire before wirring throught the "filliere" and laminate....

just my 2 cents
